Qwiic

What is Qwiic?

The Qwiic Connect System is an ecosystem of I2C sensors, actuators,
shields, and cables that make prototyping faster and less prone to error.

Here is how it works

It's a special Inter-integrated Circuit (I2C) protocol connector system that
makes prototyping faster and simpler. By using the same connectors on I2C
board, you can string together multiple boards with a couple quick clicks

Besides making the hook-up process quick (quick-qwiic…get it?), there are
other benefits to using the Qwiic connector standard:

Uncomplicate the hook-up

One cable set, that’s it. You don’t need 4+ jumper wires to
connect two modules together, just one Qwiic cable. Period.
We got you from the microcontroller to the actuator.

Daisy Chain-able

Wield the power of the I2C bus! Most Qwiic board will offer
two or more connections, so you can quickly string together
multiple boards.

Less Wiring Mistakes

The Qwiic connector is polarized and fixed, so you know without
a doubt your connection will be right. No more switch ups
between the SDA and SCL wires, or mixing up GND with VCC.
Get it right every time.

Compatible with non-Qwiic

Got a I2C board without a Qwiic connector? No problem! We offer
a breadboard friendly Qwiic cable in addition to a Qwiic adapter
board with space for 0.1” header pins. It’s a snap to use
Qwiic-enabled boards with non-Qwiic-ebabled ones.

The Qwiic Ecosystem

We love Qwiic in this office, so to help rapidly develop this ecosystem, we're putting Qwiic connectors
on all our development boards. From microcontrollers, sensors and power management, we’re trying to
make prototyping faster and smarter.

While some of us at Smart Prototyping have been using JST-SH connectors for many years to link our I2C breakout boards, Nathan Seidle at Sparkfun Electronics gave this practice the name Qwiic. We're proud to be joining Sparkfun in a fledgling Qwiic alliance, and hope to see other companies contribute to this ecosystem as well.

If you're subscribed to our newsletter, you will be sure to find out our when we launch new
Qwiic-enabled modules.

If you want to use Qwiic on your own board, we encourage you to do so! Qwiic is open source
and as long as it’s interoperable with Qwiic boards, you're good to go!

See Sparkfun's Qwiic FAQ for details governing use of the Qwiic name.

Anatomy of a Cable

Up to 4ft of data transferal (unless
you attach a Multiplexer module to
extend the bus!)

All Qwiic cables have the same color
and order:

Black – GND
Red – 3.3V
Blue - SDA
Yellow - SCL

 We don't recommend exceeding
226mA on a Qwiic cable
