The Leap Motion Controller was the first optical hand-tracking device commercially available to consumers and, with the Orion driver updates, continues to be the gold standard in hand-tracking technology.
Leap Motion, now Ultraleap, is the company that initiated Project North Star, ultimately releasing their work as an open source hardware reference design. The point of the project was, and continues to be, to kickstart development of AR software built around natural hand-based interactions. They continue to contribute significantly to the project, and both their technology and ethos are at its core.
