Raspberry Pi is well known as the perfect board for learning, coding, and creating your own projects and the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B doesn’t disappoint! On-board IoT support means you can ditch the irritating adapters. Faster processing speed and more power plus everything you know and love from the Pi 2 including shape, connectors, mounting holes, and compatible devices.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation made two major upgrades to the Pi 3 from the Pi 2. One upgrade increased the speed from 900 MHz to 1.2GHz by using the next generation Quad-Core Broadcom BCM2837 64-bit ARMv8 processor.
For the second upgrade, the Foundation added a BCM43438 WiFi chip to the Pi. This onboard wireless ability in combo with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) creates the ideal IoT solution for projects. So leave those wireless peripherals on the shelf!
Did we mention there’s also an upgraded switched power source? 2A just become 2.5A, so bring on more powerful devices.
Faster speed, boosted power ability, and built-in wireless solutions, what’s not to love? You can use most all your old Raspberry Pi 2 accessories, which are compatible with the Pi 3 thanks to its near-identical form factor.
The Raspberry Pi 3 is the third generation Raspberry Pi. It replaced the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B in February 2016. Compared to the Raspberry Pi 2 it has:
• Quad-Core 1.2GHz Broadcom BCM2837 64bit CPU
• 1GB RAM
• BCM43438 wireless LAN and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) on board
• 40-pin extended GPIO
• 4 USB 2 ports
• 4 Pole stereo output and composite video port
• Full-size HDMI
• CSI camera port for connecting a Raspberry Pi camera
• DSI display port for connecting a Raspberry Pi touchscreen display
• Micro SD port for loading your operating system and storing data
• Upgraded switched Micro USB power source up to 2.5A
The Raspberry Pi 3 has an identical form factor to the previous Pi 2 (and Pi 1 Model B+) and has complete compatibility with Raspberry Pi 1 and 2. Feel free using Pi 2 devices with this new Pi 3
